Winter is here and in Minnesota that means getting outdoors and enjoying the cold. It can also mean going indoors to enjoy the warmth of the hearth buy cooking up some great comfort food. Whichever you choose to do during these winter months, there’s something for everyone in Stillwater, Woodbury and the rest of the Twin Cities to enjoy – indoors or out.

Winter Flower Show
Como Park Zoo & Conservatory

Bring your camera and warm up inside the beautiful conservatory at the Como Zoo. The Winter Flower Show features a stunning mixture of reds, pinks, yellows and purples. Plants include — Cyclamen, Pansies, Viola, Cineraria, Amaryllis, Primula, Azaleas, Camellias, and Velthemia with their pink flower spikes.

Ice Castles
When: January 3rd through February 27th
Where: 17979 East Miller Parkway, Eden Prairie, MN 55347
Tickets: $6.95 – $12.95

Ice Castles started in the back yard of Denver home. A father was attempting to flood the backyard to create an ice rink his small children but instead created a winter wonderland of ice and light. He created caves and slides made of ice. Word got out and he’s taken his unique talent on the road.  These beautiful ice sculptures are built in only a few regions across the country each year. This is the second time Ice Castles has come to Minnesota and the first year in Eden Prairie.

Lake Harriet Winter Kite Festival
When: January 17th noon – 4pm
Where: 4135 West Lake Harriet Parkway, Minneapolis, MN 55409
Tickets: Free

The Minnesota Kite Society experts will be out demonstrating their amazing kite flying skills and will be offering lessons on how to master this fun and exciting past time.  Bring your own kite, or purchase an inexpensive one at the lake.  The Kite Festival will take place on the north end of Lake Harriet near the Bandshell. Kites of all shapes, sizes, colors and themes will fly over frozen Lake Harriet. Other outdoor events include snowshoeing, marshmallow roasting, wagon rides and ice fishing for the kids (no license required).

International Builders Show 
When: January 20th – 22nd, 2015
Where: Las Vegas

This isn’t a Minnesota winter event but the NAHB International Builders’ Show is the largest light construction show in the world. Attendees will get to participate in a host of educational classes, network with those in the building industry and take part in all the revelry that happens only in Vegas. Visitors will have access to exhibits from two of the biggest trade shows for design and construction professionals.

Saint Paul Winter Carnival

When: January 22nd – Feb 1st 2015
Where: Multiple Saint Paul Locations

It wouldn’t be a Minnesota Winter if we didn’t thumb our nose at mother nature by celebrating during the coldest month of the year. Mock the cold but beware of the Vulcan Crewe, as we celebrate the 128th Saint Paul Winter Carnival, the “Coolest Celebration on Earth” since 1886! The St. Paul Winter Carnival is full of family-friendly events held both indoors and out. Participate by hunting for treasure with clues from the St. Paul Pioneer Press (don’t forget to get your button) and watch as the newest Klondike Kate is crowned.
